About the Art
Here are a few notables regarding my work:
Media: As of 2018 I began using Golden Acrylic paints almost exclusively. In addition to the high pigment concentration and lovely texture of the paint, I believe in the way the company is run and I support their commitment to excellence. They stand behind their products so that I can stand behind mine. There are several pieces of mine still available that are painted with a combination of Liquitex, Charvin, and a few other brands that I have tried here and there. I do occasionally use alcohol ink to create certain color-bleed effects in paintings. Part of the creative process is experimentation and the joy of just seeing what happens! That said, over 90% of the color on my canvases is Golden Acrylic and everything I use is professional grade.
Substrate: The majority of my paintings are created on gallery-wrapped, back splined, 1.5” deep canvases made by Artist’s Loft. I prefer the finished backing on these canvases and like the way that the corners are folded and seamed. Since I typically wrap my paintings around the edges of the canvas, I have found that these work best for me. Sometimes I paint on wooden panels. On very rare occasion I build and stretch my own canvases. I like to provide options. By nature of the style I use, most of my work is “frame optional.” Some may be stand alone pieces on shelves or other flat surfaces depending on size.
Protection: Each painting I make is treated with Golden satin polymer varnish. This serves as a protective layer to keep acrylic colors true for the life of the painting. As oil paints oxidize over many years to provide a harder surface, there is a gradual shift in color. Varnishes used for oil paints will yellow over time. The concern for ACRYLIC paints is not so much a color shift as it is a concern for the softer surface attracting dust or dirt. The varnish I use allows for gentle cleaning with a damp cloth and can be easily removed and replaced by a professional restoration expert in the event that any physical damage needs to be repaired. This sealant remains clear and also blocks UV light that may tend to fade some of the more fragile pigments used. For more information, please feel free to email me.

What Happened this Sunmer and Upcoming Shows
Summer has been a busy season in the studio...and a great time for exploration! New techniques and media always intrigue artists and Laura is no exception to that rule. She has been experimenting with layers and interference paint, unique backgrounds, color/hue dynamics and all sorts of other really dorky art-geek stuff...and she loves every minute of it!
You can see a really cool 2-piece sea life painting by Laura Gammons at The Red Shoe Studio Gallery on Middle Street in New Bern NC...and at A Hopeful Balance Yoga Studio on Middle Street you will find the unique, perfect-for-gifting oyster shell paintings shown here. Layers of glaze and interference paints do some pretty magical things with light in these.
Laura currently has a painting in the Mumfest Exhibit sponsored By Bank of the Arts. This exhibit is spread out all over downtown New Bern. Laura's painting is housed at The Red Shoe.
There is also a "Critter Exhibit" coming up at Craven Arts Council in November/December. Laura is busy painting away and looks forward to filling space in that Beautiful Gallery! This is always a very popular, feel-good show....who doesn't love cute animal pictures?
Lastly for the month of November, Laura will be exhibiting 6 paintings at the Blount-Bridgers House in Historic Tarboro NC for the annual fundraiser. Please make the trip to the gallery in this charming little town to see art from many talented artists!!
